China’s controversial Luosifen noodle soup has continued to gain popularity after President Xi jinping visited the Luosifen Production Hub in Liuzhou, a prefecture-level city in north-central Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Monday.
Sales of the noodle dish skyrocketed across the mainland following Xi praise of the growing industry during his inspection of the production hub, according to the state-owned Global Times. Following his visit, Xi applauded the Luosifen industry for skyrocketing to profitability after starting off as a small rice noodle business and gave business owners a thumbs up.
“There was an online store owner who contacted me and vowed to buy 5,000 bags of luosifen immediately on Monday,” Guangxi Liuzhou Luoshifu’s chief Wei Wei told the outlet. “More than that, about 10 online store owners and livestreaming celebrities expressed their willingness to cooperate with me.”
Luosifen was only consumed by the locals of Liuzhou a decade ago, but it has risen to popularity among people across all of China in recent years. Some have called it a “life-changing” meal, while others would leave the house to avoid its smell when relatives consume it.
The first pre-packaged Luosifen was released in 2014 and instantly became a hit with citizens of all demographics across China, according to the South China Morning Post. In 2020, pre-packaged versions of the soup produced in Liuzhou made a total of USD$1.7 billion, according to CCTV.
